PETAL provides free counselling and bereavement support to those affected by murder and suicide in Scotland. They have recently received funding to extend their services to those affected by COVID-19 deaths. They are continuing to offer these services via telephone and online appointments, and now that lockdown restrictions are easing, with face to face meetings in Glasgow, Hamilton, Edinburgh and Dundee. Their support is available to anyone aged over 12 years old in Scotland.

Persimmon Homes Building Futures Funding Scheme: Voting Open
Persimmon Homes, in partnership with Team GB, has announced the finalists of its 2020 Building Futures scheme. The scheme aims to help projects for young people under 18 years old, offering 3 major funding prizes across different categories. PLUS Forth Valley is the only local organisation on the shortlist, with all other finalists based outwith the Forth Valley area. People can vote for their preferred finalist daily; the voting deadline is Friday 18th September.
Scottish Parliament Call for Views: Social Care Services During COVID-19
Scottish Parliament’s Health and Sport Committee is calling for views on how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on social care services at home, via a new online survey. They are especially looking for views from people who provide, or receive, care and support at home, including: individuals receiving care at home; family members and unpaid carers; staff, managers or owners of a care at home services, or personal assistants providing care. The deadline for responses is Monday 7th September.
Diabetes Scotland Online Health Events
Diabetes Scotland has announced a series of online events, including Diabetes and Dental Care, Wednesday 2nd September, 7pm, and Diabetes and Eye Health, Wednesday 7th October, 7pm.
“Care with Confidence” September Online Sessions
Falkirk and Clackmannanshire Carers Centre has launched their new “Care with Confidence” online information sessions for carers. All sessions will take place using Zoom. The next session, “Home Fire Safety – New Scottish Legislation”, takes place Tuesday 1st September, 10:30am – 12:30pm, and covers what homeowners need to know about legislation changes relating to fire and smoke alarms.
Camelon Juniors Football Club Fire and Fundraising
Unfortunately, on Saturday night a fire was deliberately set at the Camelon Junior Football Club grounds, destroying one of the new containers. The container was to provide an expansion of the foodbank based at club’s grounds, as well as additional changing rooms, which would allow the club to restart games. The club is now fundraising to replace the container and its contents; donations can be made through the GoFundMe page.
Independent Age Grants Fund: Final Round
Independent Age Independent Age has opened Round 3 of their Independent Age Grants Fund for applications, which will now be the final round. The Grants Fund aims to help smaller organisations across the UK support older people most affected by COVID-19. Some requirements have been adjusted, along with the application guidance and FAQs. In addition, there is now an online application form. The deadline is 9am on Friday 11th September.
“Influencing Services Using Participation Requests” Free Online Workshop
Our colleagues at Clackmannanshire TSI (CTSI) are holding an online workshop on “Influencing Services Using Participation Requests”, taking place on Thursday 10th September, 1:30pm – 4pm. The workshop is open to groups and organisations across the whole Forth Valley, including all of Falkirk, covering how they can start a discussion with decision makers about improving public services, through participation requests.
2020 SURF Awards: Open for Applications
Groups and organisations running community regeneration projects can now apply for the 2020 SURF Awards. The awards, organised by Scotland’s Regeneration Forum (SURF), aims to provides an opportunity for regeneration projects of all sizes to demonstrate value to funders and partners, support team-building, and develop a national profile. The 2020 awards will focus on rewarding and showcasing projects who have adapted, or created, services to support their communities through the COIVD-19 crisis. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Monday 7th September.
ILA Forth Valley Drop-In Café Update
The Independent Living Association (ILA) Forth Valley has announced that their monthly café (held at the Forth Valley Sensory Centre in Camelon) will not be restarting after COVID-19. Instead, a Facebook group is available for anyone who wishes to join, and like the café is aimed at anyone with a disability, carers and those supporting people with a disability, and anyone interested in disabled issues.
