Volunteer disengagement often happens quietly, but it doesn’t have to. The key…. Listening. Volunteers who feel heard stay committed, motivated, and ready to make an impact.
“Listening to our volunteers is only the first step. Real impact happens when we act on their feedback. When volunteers see their ideas shaping our activities and programmes, they feel valued, connected, and inspired to stay engaged,”, says Ashleigh Gillespie, Volunteering Development Officer.
Avoid common mistakes: collecting feedback without follow-up, asking vague questions, or focusing only on complaints. Instead, try strategies that work:
- Regular Check-Ins: Schedule a short, in person meeting, send an email or give them a call.
- Anonymous Suggestion Box/Survey: An opportunity to share feedback without any pressure
- Volunteer Focus Groups: Involve volunteers in shaping activities.
- Show Appreciation: Recognise input and celebrate changes made.
Listening isn’t just polite—it’s strategic. Engaged volunteers build stronger teams and create thriving communities. Start the conversation today and keep your volunteers connected and committed!
Come along to our next Connecting Volunteering Network, on Wednesday 25 February 2026 to find out more about supporting your volunteers and receiving support for yourself from sector colleagues.
