The Woodland Trust aims to make sure everybody in the UK has the chance to plant a tree; as a result, it is giving away hundreds of thousands of trees to schools and communities, including third sector and community groups (such as voluntary groups, resident associations, sports clubs, parish councils, and scouts and guides groups, amongst others).
Applications for November 2025 delivery are now open. The Woodland Trust makes 2 deliveries per year, in March and November, when the trees are dormant and suitable for planting.
Tree packs are designed to bring people together to plant trees – encouraging local wildlife, protecting the landscape against tree disease, and creating wooded areas. Planting trees will also help bring the UK closer to its 2050 carbon net-zero target.
Tree packs available include hedge, copse, wild harvest, year-round colour, working wood, wild wood, wildlife, and urban trees.
While those applying for community packs do not need to be part of an official organisation (and could even be set up for the purpose of planting these trees), the group must be not-for-profit, and willing to take on the planning, planting and care of the saplings.
Applications can be from both members and non-members of the Woodland Trust. Groups must have permission to plant trees from the legal landowner, and be able to provide the landowner’s name, plus the grid reference of the land they want to plant on (and the closest postcode).
For those applying as a community group, the land needs to be accessible to the public. The local community should be made aware of the plans to plant, and be happy for this to go ahead. The community involvement needs to be more than just being in sight of a public footpath or an annual open day. The Woodland Trust is unlikely to award trees which will be planted on private land, such as large gardens or paddocks, unless there is genuine public access.
The deadline for applications to the November delivery is Thursday 28 August 2025.
