Sustrans Scotland is inviting applications for its “ArtRoots” funding programme, offering grants of up to £6,000 to support public art projects along Scotland’s traffic-free National Cycle Network.
The initiative, launched in 2017, aims to encourage walking, wheeling, and cycling by enhancing the accessibility and visual appeal of local routes through community-led creative projects and engagement.
Funding is available to constituted community groups, non-constituted organisations, and individuals who can demonstrate strong and meaningful community involvement. The standard award is £2,500, with higher amounts considered for proposals which expect to significantly increase active travel. No match funding is required, in order to make the scheme accessible to a wide range of applicants.
Eligible projects include murals, sculptures, temporary installations, heritage signage, and community events. All proposals must demonstrate a clear link to the enhancement of the National Cycle Network and the promotion of inclusive, sustainable travel.
Applicants must first submit an Expression of Interest form, after which a dedicated Sustrans officer will provide tailored guidance and support through the application process, to help applicants develop their full proposals. Projects are assessed based on their potential to foster community engagement, improve public enjoyment of local routes, and contribute to the long-term visibility and accessibility of the network.
The deadline for applications is Wednesday 15 October 2025.
