Last month, Scottish Government published its Scottish Household Survey (SHS) 2021 report (linked for your convenience); Volunteer Scotland has analysed the volunteering data, which highlighted some interesting findings, including the importance of volunteers supporting their community or neighbourhood, with nearly one third of Scotland’s volunteers involved:
- formal volunteering participation is steady at 27% (a decline was expected)
- local community/neighbourhood volunteering continues its upward trend, now at 30% in 2021 (likely reflecting the importance of community support during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic)
In addition, the SHS showed the following demographics had a particularly strong volunteering contribution to their community/neighbourhood:
- disabled volunteers
- volunteers of colour
- rural-based volunteers
- volunteers aged 60 years old and over
