Canine Partners assistance dogs are trained to meet the needs of individuals who have a physical disability or condition which affects their daily life and limits their independence.
Canine Partners is a registered charity working to transform the lives of people with physical disabilities by partnering them with assistance dogs and other highly trained dogs. The assistance dogs bring a greater independence and quality of life to their partners, offering support, security, companionship, and practical help with everyday household tasks. These dogs also provide psychological and social benefits including increased independence, confidence, social interaction and self-esteem.
Canine Partners volunteers are available to speak to groups (virtually or in-person) in detail about what the organisation does and why, and how dogs are trained to complete everyday tasks, including:
- opening and closing doors
- unloading the washing machine
- picking up dropped items
- pressing buttons and switches
- fetching help in an emergency
In-person visits can last around 30 – 60 minutes, while virtual talks (via an online conferencing platform) will normally last 20 – 30 minutes. Volunteers can visit:
- groups including Rotary, Women’s Institute, Inner Wheel, Probus
- youth and community groups, including Guides and Scouts
- businesses and organisations
- schools, colleges and universities
- many types of other events and groups
