The Better Breaks programme is now open to applications for 2026 – 2027.
Better Breaks is a funding programme of the Short Breaks Fund, operated by Shared Care Scotland on behalf of the National Carers Organisations and Scottish Government. Around £1.7 million is available for 12 month grants (April 2026 – March 2027) for short breaks projects for disabled children and young people (aged 20 years old and under), and their carers (adult carers and/or young carers).
Better Breaks funds a wide range of short breaks projects and services, including activities and breaks for:
- disabled children and young people without their carers
- families to enjoy together
- Young or sibling carers with the person they care for
Short breaks projects and activities can include breaks away such as residential breaks, days out and/or shorter, regular sessions.
Who Can Apply
This funding is for third sector organisations operating in Scotland. The organisation does not have to be a registered charity to apply. However, it must have a constitution which states the organisation’s purposes are solely charitable, and that it delivers public benefit in achieving its purpose(s).
To be eligible for Better Breaks, projects must be able to evidence how their activities will benefit both disabled children and young people and their carers, by providing a break from their normal routine.
