Big Issue Invest (BII) is a dedicated social investment venture created to strengthen Scotland’s social enterprise landscape. Building on the ethos of The Big Issue magazine – supporting people to help themselves – BII provides flexible loan finance to organisations delivering business‑focused solutions to social challenges. Their mission is to connect investment with expertise, enabling organisations to grow, innovate and improve the lives of people across Scotland.
BII supports UK‑based social impact organisations, including social enterprises, charities, community interest companies (CICs), and other third sector bodies operating in Scotland. They do not invest in:
- sole traders
- partnerships
- private for‑profit companies
- unincorporated associations
- organisations based outside the UK
BII offers grant support alongside certain smaller loans, typically under £200,000. This flexibility aims to support socially enterprising organisations at various stages, from start‑up expansion to long‑term sustainability and scaling impact. Where appropriate, a grant element of up to 10% of the overall funding package may be included. Grant support is intended for smaller social enterprises and charities which are already trading and delivering impact, and for whom a blended approach can make borrowing more affordable.
Loan applications are accepted all year round, with no deadlines. Organisations can approach BIIS whenever they are ready to explore investment options or require financial support to progress their plans.
