Street Soccer Scotland is a non-profit charity that runs free football programmes for people from socially- disadvantaged backgrounds. They have players who are, or have experienced, homelessness; have issues with mental health; are in recovery (substance or alcohol); or have been involved with the criminal justice system. They have recently seeing players referred from the New Scots community and those seeking asylum.
Their sessions are aimed at adults over 16 years old (mixed gender, no upper age limit) who would like to get some exercise within a safe environment where the focus is very much on participation rather than winning. The sessions follow a structured path, involving a warmup routine and a few skills and drills around different aspects of the game of football (whether passing, possession or shooting). These will be tailored to the ability of all players taking part, whatever their level of fitness and footballing ability. The session will finish with a game for everyone to take part. Afterwards there is space for teas and coffees, and a chance to get together in a relaxed atmosphere.
Every Friday, from 11.15am – 1.00pm, they host an open session at Ochilview Stadium Stenhousemuir where players do not have to prebook, but simply turn up to take part. All are welcome, as sessions cater for all levels of ability and fitness, with time for refreshments and socialisation afterwards.
