The Social Innovation Challenge (SIC) is a grant funding and support programme designed to identify and develop innovative solutions to social and environmental challenges across Scotland.
Delivered by Firstport, the programme is now open for applications. SIC supports individuals with innovative ideas for social enterprise projects which address some of Scotland’s most pressing social and environmental challenges, and is open to anyone with an idea for a social enterprise project which can deliver meaningful, long-term positive impact.
Applications are sought for projects addressing one of four themes:
- eradicating child poverty
- growing the economy through inclusive employment opportunities
- tackling the climate emergency
- ensuring high-quality and sustainable public services
The overall winner will receive a £30,000 grant and tailored support to help develop and launch their solution. Two additional finalists will each receive £10,000, alongside introductions and signposting to other funding and capacity-building opportunities. Funding can be used to support a range of start-up and development costs, including research and development, salaries, equipment, rent and other essential operational expenses.
SIC is aimed at individuals with innovative ideas which have the potential to create lasting social change. Previous winners have developed solutions addressing issues such as youth unemployment, the cost of living and access to childcare.
The application process has two stages: an Expression of Interest (EOI), followed by a full application. Before beginning their EOI, applicants are encouraged to read the Guidance Notes, which explain the application process in full and provide guidance on each question in the application form.
The deadline for applications is 1pm on Friday 28 August 2026.
