The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) has launched the first ever research to focus on the experiences of people who are d/Deaf or have hearing loss when using public transport in the UK, via an online survey.
The RNID Public Transport Accessibility Survey (funded by the Motability Foundation) has been developed alongside an advisory panel of people who are d/Deaf or have hearing loss, as an opportunity for people in these groups to share their experiences of using public transport. Responses will directly inform RNID’s work with transport providers, policymakers and technology companies.
“With your help, we can push for meaningful change to public transport in the UK. We are gathering the information we need to build the strongest possible case for improving public transport. Every answer you share helps us better understand the barriers people face and the solutions that would make the biggest difference.”
The survey is open to anyone who is d/Deaf or has hearing loss, or is a carer or travel companion supporting someone who is d/Deaf or has hearing loss. It should take around 15 – 20 minutes to complete. Respondents may choose not to answer any questions or to stop participating at any time.
As a thank you for taking part, respondents can enter a prize draw to win a £100 voucher at the end of the survey.
Deadline and How to Respond
The deadline for responses is Monday 13 April 2026.
To submit your response, or for further information, please visit the dedicated survey page (linked for your convenience).
Details on how to access further information are also available below.
About RNID
“RNID is the national charity supporting the more than 18 million adults in the UK who are deaf, have hearing loss, or tinnitus. We work to end the discrimination faced by our communities, help people hear better now, and fund world-class research to restore hearing and silence tinnitus.”
Accessibility
Every question is translated into British Sign Language (BSL). Respondents also have the option of responding to open-ended questions in BSL.
Data Collection, Use, and Storage
RNID will collect data through Forsta Surveys. Any personal information shared will be kept confidential. Respondents’ data will be used to support RNID’s campaigning and policy work to improve how public transport meets the needs of our communities. If you stop part-way through the survey, your data will be excluded from RNID’s analysis.
If respondents choose to provide their personal details and contact information, this will only be used to contact them as they have agreed. (Please note, if you took part anonymously, we will not be able to remove your data. If you change your mind about participating after completing the survey, RNID can remove your data up to Wednesday 15 April 2026 if you have provided your name and contact details within the survey.)
Respondents’ data will be stored securely in RNID’s internal SharePoint environment for 10 years before being deleted. Only relevant project team members will have access to this data. Further information about how RNID processes and stores data is available in RNID’s Social Research Privacy Notice.
