Scottish Government has launched a consultation on proposals to update the School Premises (General Requirements and Standards) (Scotland) Regulations 1967, which set out minimum standards for school buildings and facilities, so they reflect modern educational needs.
The aim is to ensure the regulations reflect modern educational needs, including aspects such as internal and outdoor space, digital infrastructure, sanitary facilities and wellbeing areas, while removing outdated or duplicative requirements.
Stakeholders (including education authorities, school staff, designers, parents and community organisations) are invited to share their views on the proposed changes. Responses can be submitted online, by email, or by post. The consultation consists of 12 questions, with the options to save responses and come back at a later point.
The consultation closes to new responses on Tuesday 31 March 2026, and those with an interest in the future of school premises across Scotland are encouraged to respond before the deadline.
To submit your response, please visit the Scottish Government consultation page (linked for your convenience).
