A Trustees’ Week blog post from our Team Leader for Organisational Development, Tariq Mahmood (pictured below) on the importance of a strong board of trustees, and the launch of our new trustees training programme, Getting on Board:
Trustees’ Week and Getting on Board
For anyone who doesn’t know me, my name is Tariq Mahmood, and I have been with CVS Falkirk for almost 10 years. During that time, I’ve worked in the Organisation Development team, helping groups and organisations find funding and strengthen their boards and their policies, where I am now the Team Leader. I also organise our Funders Fayre each year.
One of our roles at CVS Falkirk is to help you build your capacity and continue to be as strong and resilient as possible, whatever the world throws at us in the third sector. I’m a firm believer that this begins with the board of any organisation, no matter what organisation it is, whoever they work with, big or small.
Whether you have a Board of Directors, Trustees, or a Management Committee, they are the people who have general control and management of your group or organisation, and are responsible for making sure that you works to achieve your purposes and aims and comply with all legal requirements.
The role of a Trustee is extremely important and can be very rewarding. It is important for everyone that they know what their responsibilities are, and understand what they are expected to do.
This is why my colleagues and I have organised Getting on Board: Trustees Training, which takes place later this month. I’m really excited by this programme – it’s important to me to offer different, unique options to our sector here in Falkirk. It’s not every day you get to hear from national experts on hiring, strategies and how to handle conflicts of interest!
I really hope we’ll see you all there – we know how busy everyone else, but that’s why we have organised something truly unique that we hope will be able to aid you as we navigate some difficult times ahead.
I always recommend that anyone who is interested in becoming a Trustee of a charity reads through OSCR’s very useful Good Practice for Charity Trustees. You can also hear from local trustees on their experiences and what being a trustee means to them, via our Trustees’ Week 2020 videos.
Remember, we’re always here to help your group or organisation, across the whole team – staff, volunteers, and trustees. Contact us at any time by email: info@cvsfalkirk.org.uk
