A new photography exhibition will celebrate 45 years of Strathcarron Hospice, aiming to offer a “unique insight into the people, compassion and communities at the heart of hospice care”.

Strathcarron Stories is the first exhibition of its kind in the Hospice’s history, and features two Scottish photographers, who explored what Strathcarron Hospice means to the people whose lives have been touched by the Hospice over the last four decades.

About Strathcarron Stories

The exhibition will look back “at the people, moments and communities that have shaped the Hospice since it opened in 1981”, but will also look forward, inviting people to reflect on the future of hospice care and the role local communities will continue to play in supporting it.

Award-winning photographers Margaret Mitchell and Charles McGuigan were each commissioned to make new bodies of work, reflecting on both the Hospice and the community around it:

Margaret Mitchell’s series, “Of Stillness and Care”, is focused within the Hospice, “reflecting on the people and the objects through which care is shown and practised”.
Charles McGuigan’s collection, “More Than a Building”, looks beyond the Hospice walls to the communities across Forth Valley, Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, where more than 80% of Strathcarron’s specialist care now takes place.

Exhibition Display Dates

Stirling Photography Festival (August 2026)

As part of Stirling Photography Festival, Strathcarron Hospice is holding a talk on Strathcarron Stories, taking place on Thursday 27 August 2026, 12pm – 2pm, at The Barracks Conference Centre, Forthside Way, Stirling, FK8 1QZ.

Margaret Mitchell and Charles McGuigan will be joined by Strathcarron Hospice staff to discuss the work and offer creative insight into their projects. Additionally, a small preview selection of photographs from the forthcoming exhibition will be on display at the Conference Centre, Friday 14 August 2026 – Friday 25 September 2026.

Forth Valley Royal Hospital (October 2026)

A selected preview of the work will also be on display in Forth Valley Royal Hospital Atrium, Friday 2 October 2026 – Wednesday 7 October 2026.

Tolbooth Gallery, Stirling (November – December 2026)

The exhibition will be available Friday 13 November 2026 – Wednesday 23 December 2026 at The Toolboth Gallery, Jail Wynd, Stirling, FK8 1DE.

The Strathcarron Stories exhibition at The Tolbooth Gallery is supported by The Robertson Trust, where visitors will also be able to experience video interviews made by Strathcarron over the years featuring staff, volunteers, patients and families sharing their own Strathcarron Stories, shown alongside the new photography.
