Throughout November, CVS Falkirk & District is supporting NHS Forth Valley and the Health Improvement Team in raising awareness of Mouth Cancer Action Month and the importance of recognising the signs of mouth cancer early. Around 10,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with mouth cancer each year, and cases continue to rise. Raising awareness of the signs, symptoms and risk factors can help more people seek advice early and improve their chances of successful treatment.
Mouth cancer is not as widely talked about as some other cancers, so it’s important to know what to look for and why early checks matter. Mouth cancer can develop anywhere in the mouth as well as other areas of the head and neck, and is more common in men and people aged over 40.
Signs include any of the following that lasts for 3 weeks or more:
- An ulcer or sore that does not heal.
- A lump or swelling in the mouth or neck.
- Persistent red or white patches in the mouth.
- A hoarse voice that does not go away.
- Difficulty moving the tongue or not being able to stick it out straight.
Knowing where to go if we see something out of the ordinary is vital, and to ensure individuals understand what ‘ordinary’ looks like, NHS Forth Valley deliver various oral health improvement programmes looking at topics such as Caring for your Teeth and Gums; Coping with Dental Anxiety; and Illness and Infection of the Mouth.
To help raise awareness of Mouth Cancer locally, NHS Forth Valley are encouraging residents to make the most of digital resources such as those available for Blue Wednesday (a social campaign taking place on Wednesday 18 November 2026 to encourage everyone to complete checks for Mouth Cancer).
You can support Mouth Cancer Action Month by sharing information with your networks and helping to spread the word within your community. For resources and information, please visit the Mouth Cancer website (linked for your convenience).
Regular dental check-ups usually include a mouth cancer examination as dentists are trained to spot early changes. For help registering with a dental practice, accessing emergency treatment or general queries, visit the NHS Forth Valley Dental Services webpage (linked for your convenience).
NHS Forth Valley and the Health Improvement Team also provides free dental packs and information resources for local groups and organisations. For more information, please contact fv.smile4life@nhs.scot
