Scottish Government is looking for around 50 volunteers to help improve the 2023/24 Health and Care Experience (HACE) Survey.
Volunteers should be aged 17 years old and over, and registered with a GP in Scotland. They will test and provide feedback on the questionnaire, by sense-checking the questions and supporting materials.
The HACE Survey is used to assess the quality of health and social care services in Scotland, and help improve them; however, volunteers will not be submitting their own answers, but helping the research team make the survey as easy to use for everyone as possible. They will look at whether the right questions are being asked, and if the survey is user-friendly and easily understood with accessible language.
What is Involved?
The participant will:
- meet online with a researcher
- read parts of the questionnaire and/or accompanying invitation (such as a letter, information sheet, or privacy note)
- tell the researcher what goes through their mind when reading this material – for example, what parts are difficult to understand, how they interpret the questions, and what they were thinking about when they chose an answer
The researcher will mostly listen to the participants and ask questions if they arise.
What Information Will be Collected?
The researchers are only interested in volunteers’ interpretation and understanding of the survey questions. They are not interested in the answers volunteers give to the survey questions, and will not record their answers to the survey questions. Volunteers are also free to skip any question they do not feel comfortable answering.
Following the interviews, the interview feedback will be collated, aggregated and anonymised.
Where, When and How Long Does it Take?
Interviews will be online, and last about one hour (it could be longer or shorter, depending on how many different health and care services volunteers have used in the last 12 months and are comfortable discussing). Interviews will be in July or August, at a time and date agreed between the participant and the researcher.
The researchers are statisticians and researchers working at Scottish Government, mostly based in Edinburgh. Interviews will be online, to allow them to speak easily and directly with people who live everywhere in Scotland.
