Families Outside is hosting 3 training sessions, designed to be suitable for professionals from any sector who want to feel more confident when supporting families affected by imprisonment. Places are £55 per person, per session.
Happening throughout June, the sessions are being held online via Microsoft Teams:
Session 1: Wednesday 4 June 2025, 9:30am – 12:30pm: “Understanding the Issues for Families Affected by Imprisonment”. This session will cover:
- the wide-ranging issues which can affect families with a family member in prison
- the impact of imprisonment on families at each stage of the criminal justice process
- how to apply this knowledge when supporting families affected by imprisonment

Session 2: Wednesday 11 June, 9:30am – 12:30pm: “Supporting Children and Young People Who Have a Family Member In Prison”. This session will cover:
- the varying needs of children and young people with a family member in prison
- policies to support and protect children who are affected by imprisonment – specifically the UNCRC and relevant articles for children with a parent in prison
- how to apply this knowledge when supporting children and young people who are affected by imprisonment, or know how to seek appropriate support

Session 3: Wednesday 25 June, 9:30am – 12:30pm: “Prison and Prison Visiting”. This session will cover:
- the key functions and elements of the Scottish Prison Estate
- the importance for families of maintaining contact, and ways to do this, when someone is in prison
- the supports available to families within a prison environment
