Welcome to Falkirk
July 2, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
FreeCVS Falkirk is holding a drop-in “Welcome to Falkirk” event on Saturday 2nd July, 12pm – 2pm, at the Callendar Square, High Street, Falkirk, FK1 1JN, to welcome people new to the local area and show them what support, services and activities are available from the third sector in Falkirk.
The event will include a range of third sector groups and organisations, who will provide information about how they can help local people, as well as some fun summer activities. The event is drop-in, as are most of the activities, but please note the Falkirk Library Bookbug session will run 12:15pm – 12:45pm with spaces for a limited number of families, and spaces will be given on a first come, first served basis.
Attendees can also visit the July Falkirk Producer’s Market on Falkirk High Street, taking place on the same day, 10am – 4pm.
Lynsey Hansford, Interim Partnership Manager at CVS Falkirk, said:
“The third sector provides a huge range of supportive and inclusive services and activities across the Falkirk and district areas. Their commitment in reaching out to people who are new to the Falkirk, whichever route they took to get here, is admirable. I am delighted to see so many of them coming together for this event: to share information about how they can help to run fun activities and to say a big collective WELCOME to all our new bairns.”
Hosts Falkirk Sewing Studio will also hold a FREE taster drop-in sewing workshop using donated fabric during the event. This will provide participants an introduction to their free weekly Falkirk Community Sewing Club, which promotes sewing while aiming to build social networks, reduce loneliness and prevent social isolation.
Uatandua Kahere, the Director of Ubuntu Collaborative CIC (the social enterprise that runs Falkirk Sewing Studio), said:
“We are delighted to have this activity to coincide with CVS Falkirk’s Welcome to Falkirk event to welcome all newcomers to Falkirk. The event promises to be an excellent opportunity to welcome newcomers to Falkirk, however they have arrived to be a part of our community and make connections in our community.
“The activity we have planned at our studio during the event is designed in such a way that it links in with our social enterprise’s goals to promote skills in sewing, helps participants to end loneliness and social isolation. We encourage members of the community to join us and learn new skills and sign up for our FREE weekly Community Sewing Club that will provide an opportunity to sustain the connections made at the Welcome to Falkirk event.”
Other activities on the day will include joyful art-making workshop, bunting decorating, and arts and crafts, including fun for children.
This event is open to everyone, but especially those who are new to the Falkirk and district areas, including refugees and asylum seekers. Focusing on these people is a way to make them feel more comfortable as unexpectedly changing country can be daunting. This Welcome to Falkirk event will hopefully make the transition easier and make them aware of the support services available to them.
