House of Hormones Edinburgh Fringe Event
August 21, 2025 @ 1:15 pm - 2:15 pm
FreeThe Scottish Centre for Conflict Resolution (SCCR, by Cyrenians) and Parenting Across Scotland are holding a free Edinburgh Fringe event exploring intergenerational conflict amplified through hormonal changes.
“House of Hormones” takes place on Thursday 21 August 2025 from 1:15pm in The Biosphere of Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh, EH8 8AS, bringing together experts and parents navigating adolescence and midlife, with contributions from Lyndsay Harrison, General Nurse Practitioner and founder of Workplace Menopause Support.
“What happens when perimenopause and puberty take place under one roof? Welcome to the House of Hormones: a free Edinburgh Fringe event where science meets the realities of family life, offering mums and teenagers understanding and empathy.”
Lyndsay is a General Nurse Practitioner and founder of Workplace Menopause Support, who will unpack the physiological and psychological changes taking place during menopause, and how these changes can impact family dynamics.
Lyndsay says:
“As a nurse practitioner it may surprise you to know that I didn’t recognise my own perimenopause symptoms, an experience that’s surprisingly common. This led me to pursue menopause training, set up a dedicated Menopause clinic in general practice and launch Workplace Menopause Support. While public awareness is growing, most workplaces still lack the knowledge and confidence to support employees going through it, Workplace Menopause Support exists to change that.
“When invited to take part in the House of Hormones event, I didn’t hesitate, knowing how often I see women struggling in silence. This event will help adolescents & parents/carers understand what is going on during these complex hormonal transitions and give them the tools to come through this challenging time of life with their relationships undamaged.”
Amy Woodhouse, Chief Executive of Parenting across Scotland, says:
“Parenting across Scotland is delighted to be partnering with the Scottish Centre for Conflict Resolution and Workplace Menopause Support to bring this very special event to the Edinburgh Fringe for the first time.
“While our awareness of both puberty and menopause may be on the increase, we very seldom talk about them together. And yet, many households will have different family members going through these hormonal changes at the same time. We believe there is a lot we can learn from each other on this topic, and we hope that our House of Hormones event will help to bring some mutual understanding, as well as provide tips and ideas about how all members of the family can navigate these changes.”
Katie Walker, Learning Facilitator for Cyrenians’ Scottish Centre for Conflict Resolution, who will also be speaking at the event, says:
“Family conflict remains the leading cause of youth homelessness in Scotland. Adolescence is a driver for conflict, which parents can manage through modelling the behaviour they want to see their young people emulate – but what if mum is struggling with her own hormonal mood swings? This event sheds light on a moment in the life of families we’ve thought too rarely about.”
Entry to House of Hormones is free, though booking is advised.
