CVS Falkirk Martyn’s Law Online Consultation Session

The Home Office has launched a public consultation on the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, also known as Martyn’s Law, regarding revised proposals for the Standard Tier (public premises with a maximum occupancy of 100 – 799).

In advance, small venues across Forth Valley (including those owned or managed by third sector groups and organisations) are invited to feedback on the Martyn’s Law consultation via an online session hosted by CVS Falkirk, taking place via Zoom, 3pm – 4:30pm on Thursday 29^th February.

Background

Known as “Martyn’s Law”, the Bill is named after Martyn Hett, one of 22 people killed in the 2017 Manchester attack. The new laws would require venues to take certain steps to keep the public and communities safe, such as training, information sharing, and completion of a preparedness plan.

The public consultation seeks views to make sure the new requirements do not place undue burdens on smaller organisations and businesses, while still protecting the public. It particularly seeks views from those responsible for smaller premises, especially those in the third sector.

The consultation is open to the public until Monday 18^th March; to submit your response, please visit the UK Government website (linked for your convenience).

Following the conclusion of the consultation process, the Bill will be introduced as soon as Parliamentary time allows.

Relevance to Forth Valley

Across the Forth Valley area, there are a number of small venues used, rented, owned by businesses, public authorities, and third sector groups and organisations, which sit under the Standard Tier definition (public premises with a maximum occupancy of 100 – 799).

Although the likelihood of a terrorist incident occurring locally remains highly unlikely, the safety of communities when accessing these premises is of paramount importance. The proposed changes to this approach include asking those responsible for smaller venues to undertake low-cost effective measures such as training, information sharing, and completion of a preparedness plan.
