Care with Confidence – Frontotemporal Dementia: “Short Breaks”
February 8, 2023 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
FreeFalkirk and Clackmannanshire Carers Centre is bringing back their Care with Confidence sessions, and Information Afternoons for Professionals, with dates announced through to March, including their Care with Confidence – Frontotemporal Dementia session.
Taking place via Zoom and in-person at the Carers Centre, 1A Bank Street, Falkirk, FK1 1NB, these sessions are open to carers of people with a confirmed diagnosis of Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD)), taking place on the dates below.
The monthly sessions provide information and support to carers in an informal setting; professionals are also invited on a regular basis to talk about the clinical, social and legal aspects of care, as noted below.
- Wednesday 11th January, 10:30am – 12pm: “Dementia, Dentistry and Oral Health”
- Evelyn Kid from the Dental Action Plan Team will talk through things to consider when someone with dementia needs to visit the dentist, and the ways carers can support their cared for person with their oral hygiene.
- Wednesday 8th February, 10:30am – 12pm: “Short Breaks”
- For this session, attendees will be joined by Lynda Wright from Falkirk Short Breaks Bureau, who will outline what respite options are available and how any allocated budget can be used creatively to accommodate those living with FTD, especially if their symptoms present differently and mean formal respite may not be an option.
- Wednesday 8th March, 10:30am – 12pm: “Speech & Language Therapy & FTD”
- FTD may affect a person’s ability to speak fluently, and/or have difficulty swallowing. Forth Valley Royal Hospital’s team of Speech and Language Therapists (SALTs) will be attending the session to discuss how they assess difficulties with swallowing and communication. They can also offer support through swallowing and speech exercises, dietary advice and changes to medication.
