Carer Positive is a free Scottish Government funded initiative run by Carers Scotland. The aim is to encourage Scottish employers to support their staff with caring responsibilities, and is delivered in the form of a multi-level award.
Carers Scotland is calling on third sector groups and organisations to join the initiative, so that more carers (and they as employers) can enjoy the benefits of a caring and supportive workplace.
Now in its fifth year, Carer Positive recognises employers for their commitment and actions in developing carer friendly and inclusive workplaces, which contribute to improved employee wellbeing and retention.
Research by Carers Scotland and Carers UK has revealed that more than 300,000 people in Scotland have quit their job to care for a loved one who is older, disabled or seriously ill. The average number of carers in the workplace is 15% across the UK, meaning almost 400,000 people in Scotland are trying to balance their paid job with caring. That translates to one in 7 of all workers in Scotland – and as the population ages, the research estimates that this figure will continue to rise.
Over 180 organisations across Scotland are now recognised as Carer Positive employers, including many from the third sector, with support and resources provided by Carers Scotland as required.
Participating employers are awarded with a framed certificate and workplace posters, and can display the Carer Positive logo on documents and communication materials. They will also be able to access Carer Positive events and peer support.
