Falkirk Leisure and Culture (formerly Falkirk Community Trust) is looking for Gallery Assistant volunteers at Callendar House in Falkirk.

Gallery Assistant volunteers support the temporary exhibitions at Callendar House – this opportunity is focused on “East and West – Scottish paintings by Barbara Rae”, which runs Wednesday 20^th May – Sunday 10^th September.

Born in Falkirk, contemporary painter Barbara Rae is a member of both the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy in London, and is the recipient of multiple awards. “Rae’s bold richly coloured paintings combine the influence of landscape and travel with painterly abstraction and can be found in many public collections.”

Gallery Assistant volunteers will meet and greet visitors to this exhibition and provide informal tours, or information about the artist and her work. The role involves:

interaction with visitors to the temporary exhibition spaces, providing information on the exhibition and the artists involved
supervising work on display
providing and sharing information about the exhibition, Callendar House and upcoming events and exhibitions

Volunteers must be able to commit to one 3.5 hour shift per week. Skills, attitude and experience required include:

experience of presenting to, and engaging with visitors
the ability to gauge visitor interest and engagement with the exhibition in order to balance the levels and depths of communication
willing to communicate with all ages of visitors and adjust communication accordingly to suit visitor interest and age
ability to work within a team of volunteers and communicate with a wider team of staff at Callendar House via face to face

Training will be available to help volunteers develop knowledge of the exhibition and standard practice for engaging with visitors. An introduction to Callendar House will provide health and safety awareness as well as radio etiquette; training on communication skills for visitor attractions will also be available.

Travel expenses will be provided up to £2.40 per volunteer shift.
