Suicide Prevention Scotland Online Session

FreeSuicide Prevention Scotland are running two webinars on online harm and suicide prevention.
- Session One will look at the Online Safety Act and Social Media, taking place 2pm – 3:30pm on Wednesday 4th December 2024:
The first half of this session will be delivered by Stefan Webster, Martha Kirby and Helene Nyegaard-Larsen from Ofcom, who will present on the Online Safety Act, giving an introduction to the Act itself and Ofcom’s role as regulator and talking about how suicide prevention is covered by the Act.
The second half will be delivered by Dr Rachel Harris, Research and Development Manager from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Rachel will present on “Social Media: its use and impact on mental health and wellbeing among young people – findings from the literature, with a focus on self-harm and suicidality”.

- Session Two will look at the social media use in the aftermath of a suicide, and takes place 10am – 11:30am on Thursday 23rd January 2025:
This session will be delivered by Dr Jo Bell from the University of Hull and will cover the harmful and protective effects of social media use in the aftermath of a suicide, how social media use can be harnessed to manage trauma, alleviate grief and reach those who need support and provide guidance and recommendations for prevention policy and practice. There will also be time for Q&A.
