Doors Open Day 2023: Kinneil House

September 23, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Free

Colzium House in Kilsyth will be open for Doors Open Day 2023, which takes place on Saturday 16th September.

Doors Open Day is a national free festival celebrating places and stories, both new and old, which takes place every September, coordinated by the Scottish Civic Trust (as part of European Heritage Days) and Archaeology Scotland (during Scottish Archaeology Month), supported by Historic Environment Scotland.

Colzium House, located in the Colzium-Lennox Estate, Stirling Road, Kilsyth, G65 0PY, will be open 11am – 3pm, with free drop-in tours (run by Friends of Colzium) outlining the history of the house and medieval life in Kilsyth, along with opportunities to dress up and handle replica objects. Children can also make their own stained glass window based on the prominent window in the hall – please note this activity costs £2 per child.

Next week, Kinneil House in Bo’ness will also be open to the public as part of their Doors Open Day 2023 celebrations, on Saturday 23rd September, 10am – 4pm.

Kinneil House was once one of the seats of the powerful Hamilton family, and is located next to the Antonine Wall, with extensive grounds featuring orchards and gardens, along with community groups (including Sustainable Thinking Scotland CIC). People can explore the house (where James Watt developed his first engine in the 1700s) and grounds, with guided outdoor tours led by the Friends of Kinneil from 12pm.
