VHS Public Health Review

Posted on April 8, 2016

On Wednesday 23rd March, Voluntary Health Scotland (VHS) held a public health review sounding board in Edinburgh.  The event was attended by representatives from many third sector organisations, who received presentations from NHS Education for Scotland and Scottish Government which focused on the Review of Public Health 2015, published by Scottish Government in February 2016.

Key messages from the review included:

  • The impact of social and economic conditions on health
  • The increased demands on the NHS
  • Increased weight issues in Scotland
  • Avoidable disease
  • Excessive mortality in Scotland
  • Life expectancy issues

A number of additional topics were discussed, including how the third sector can be viewed and treated as an equal partner, the fact that third sector organisations are often best placed to represent communities due to close links between the two, and whether there should be more general overarching aims in Scotland as a whole with regards to improving public health.

For further information, including supporting information from the event, please visit the VHS website.
