Scotland’s new online census response portal is now live on the dedicated website, meaning people can now complete their census responses once they have received their Internet Access Code (IAC).
About the Census
Scotland’s Census 2022 should be completed by every household, as the information provided helps make decisions about how public money will be spent on schools, roads, healthcare and other services in Scotland.
The census asks questions on a range of topics, including the types of accommodation people stay in, household relationships, age, sex, health and employment status. New questions for the 2022 census include use of British Sign Language (BSL), passports held, sexual orientation, gender representation and previous armed forces service history.
How to Take Part and Support Options
IACs will be delivered by letter to each household. Each letter provides the household’s unique IAC, and how to take part online, how to request a posted paper form (if preferred or required), how to request a replacement IAC (which can be provided in a range of ways, including e-mail, post and text), and sources of advice and support.
On the census website homepage (linked for your convenience), people will be directed to login with their IAC.
Census Day is Sunday 20th March, but people can complete their responses as soon as they receive their letter.
In addition to the response portal, the website includes:
- information on support sources and the census itself
- contact information
- accessibility information
- audio, Braille, BSL and large print materials
- guidance translations in 16 other languages (including Gaelic)
- easy read guide (as a webpage and pdf)
- resources (including how to spot scams and fraud)
People can contact the new Census Contact Centre, which is available by web chat, contact form, and by freephone: 0800 030 8308.
There is also a British Sign Language (BSL) video relay service (VRS) via contactSCOTLAND-BSL and translations, and a text relay service available.
“Scotland Connected” Canvas
Last month, a new census canvas, named “Scotland Connected”, was unveiled at the census launch at Glasgow University.
The canvas was created by Edinburgh-based Spanish artist Pilar Garcia de Leaniz, and will tour 12 different places in Scotland as part of a Census Roadshow during March, where local communities can add to the canvas, before it arrives in Edinburgh on Census Day.
“Scotland Connected” was designed to represent the fabric of Scotland, its people and landmarks, and the role of the census. Pilar Garcia de Leaniz studied as a Master of Illustration at Edinburgh College of Art, where she is currently a Teaching Fellow in Textiles. She said:
“The artwork … is inspired by a desire to show everything that’s great about Scotland and I’m excited to see the canvas come to life over the coming weeks as it tours communities.
“It’s been a real honour to be a part of the project and have the chance to produce a piece that captures the essence of the census and the way in which it benefits communities across Scotland.”
