Public Health Scotland (PHS) has launched their new “STI Safer Sex” Campaign, which runs until the end of September 2023.
According to PHS and the NHS, in Scotland, cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including gonorrhoea and chlamydia, are increasing among people under 25 years old, with the number of infections more than doubling since 2017. This increase means that 1 in every 200 people aged under 25 years old has gonorrhoea; if left untreated, this can lead to long term health problems.
The best protection from gonorrhoea, and other STIs, is the correct and consistent use of condoms for vaginal, anal and oral sex.
The new prevention campaign has been developed in collaboration with NHS Health Boards, NHS24 and third sector partners, and will use social media in particular to raise awareness, using the hashtag #SafeIsSexy (on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, all linked for your convenience). Those who plan on posting about the campaign on social media are encouraged to use the hashtag.
Campaign messages and resources are also available on the Central Sexual Health Facebook page.
