Police Scotland’s Cybercrime Harm Prevention Team has shared guidance from their trusted partners at the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), on being vigilant about scamming, including phishing emails. The guidance highlights what phishing is, and breaks it down to support people on how to spot and report scam emails, texts and calls.
Phishing emails will appear as being genuine, and the scammers will either include a nefarious link which will download a malware to your device, or direct you to a fake website asking for bank details or other personal information.
The NCSC is urging the public to follow its Cyber Aware guidance, which is designed to support people in protecting their online accounts from scammers, and help them protect personal and financial information.
The NCSC is also working closely with the energy regulator, Ofgem, to help protect customers, as they are aware scammers have tried to capitalise on the energy crisis. They have created additional support with their Stop – Check – Protect guidance, available to view on the Ofgem website (linked for your convenience).
Additionally, the NCSC also has the power to investigate and take down scam email addresses and websites. Reporting a scam email to the NCSC is free and can be done by email: report@phishing.gov.uk
