With the UK general election less than 100 days away, it’s timely to remind ourselves about the legal requirements facing charities. OSCR has produced general guidance on charities and political campaigning as a ready reference.
It’s set out in the form of Frequently Asked Questions, and aims to support you in meeting the requirements of both electoral and charity law in advance of the election, which takes place on 7th May.
The new guidance follows OSCRs guidance for charities on campaigning in the Scottish independence referendum, which was well received in the sector. In addition, the Electoral Commission has produced detailed guidance for the Transparency of Lobbying, Non-Party Campaigning and Trade Union Administration Act 2014. This UK legislation sets financial limits on campaigns and requires organisations – including charities – to register if they plan to take part in campaigning activity.
