The Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust (JSAWT) was set up in 1982, by philanthropist and animal lover Mrs Jean Sainsbury. Since the first small donations were made 1983, JSAWT has given over £12 million to animal welfare charities working both in the UK and abroad. During 2023, to celebrate 40 Years of Giving, JSAWT donated £412,000 in additional funding.
The objectives of JSAWT are to donate to UK registered charities whose purposes encompass one or more of the following: to benefit or protect animals; to relieve animals from suffering; to conserve wild life; to encourage the understanding of animals. Through this trust, Charities registered in the UK that are working to offer sanctuary, rehoming, and rehabilitation to animals in the UK and/or internationally can apply for grants of up to £35,000. Organisations involved with wildlife conservation, the rescue, rehabilitation and (where possible) release of animals are also eligible to apply. The funding supports general running costs or capital purchases.
The Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust encourages repeat applications from charities when further financial support might be given if funds allow.
The deadline for applications is 1 September 2024.
