Naloxone Training for Trainers

September 13, 2017 - September 14, 2017

NHS Forth Valley are holding a 2 day Naloxone Training for Trainers course on Wednesday 13th – Thursday 14th September, 9:30am – 4:30pm at Signpost Recovery, Cooperage Way, Alloa, FK10 3LP.

The training is aimed at those staff in a position to provide training on overdose prevention, intervention and naloxone to people likely to witness an overdose, which will encourage the uptake and improve the awareness of Take-Home Naloxone (THN).

The course aims to provide a detailed overview of drug-related deaths (DRDs) globally, nationally and locally with an emphasis on overdose prevention, intervention and naloxone.  It will explore the causes of DRDs, risk factors, high risk times, myths and how to identify the signs and symptoms of an overdose.

There will be an in-depth review of naloxone, its actions, kit assembly and administration, with specific attention to the inclusion of naloxone in basic life support.

Following the course workshops and practical skills training, participants should feel confident in identifying an overdose and intervening with naloxone, which will be available for emergency use to services in contact with people who use drugs.

Staff and volunteers working in drug services will also be able to supply THN directly to eligible individuals and services (provided the necessary local frameworks are in place).

By the end of the session participants should:

  • have a clear understanding of the evidence-based overdose prevention and naloxone messages
  • clearly identify and communicate the observable signs and symptoms of a depressant overdose, and respond accordingly
  • be equipped with the skills and knowledge to manage an overdose emergency
  • provide training on overdose prevention, intervention and naloxone to people likely to witness an overdose
  • have a much greater understanding of the National Naloxone Programme and its importance to assist in the reduction of DRDs

The course is free, but places are limited and booking is essential.
