Nominations are open for the Dennis Canavan Scholarship, which awards young people in Falkirk District for a range of community activities and volunteering.
The scholarship makes a one-time £500 financial award to a pupil who is pursuing a full-time course in further or higher education. To be eligible, the young person must attend school, live in the Falkirk Council area, and have given notable service to others, including:
- volunteering
- charity sponsorship
- sports coaching
- caring for others
The scholarship fund was set up by Falkirk Council in recognition of the political contribution by Dennis Canavan to the life of the Falkirk community. For over 30 years, Dennis Canavan represented Falkirk West as an MP, and later as its first MSP, until he retired in 2007. He has always been committed to supporting young people at all levels of education.
Anyone from a school or community organisation can nominate a young person for the scholarship. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday 30th April; nominations will be evaluated in May, and an award presentation will take place in August or September.
To nominate a young person, or for further information, please visit the Falkirk Council website.
