Scottish Waterways Trust in Falkirk are now recruiting for their Canal College outdoor employability programme (launching Tuesday 22nd January), and their Green Action outdoor skills programme (launching Thursday 24th January).
The Canal College is aimed at young people aged 16 – 30 years, taking place Mondays and Tuesdays, 10am – 4pm, for 14 weeks. Applications from people over 30 years old who would benefit significantly from taking part will also be considered. The programme offers an opportunity for participants to not only gain a range of outdoor practical skills, but also to work towards SQA Level 2 Cultural Heritage and Level 5 Working Safely qualifications.
This programme aims to help participants in building their CV, experiences and qualifications, and preparing them for employment.
Green Action is a 12 week outdoor skills course for young people aged 16 – 24 years who are not currently in employment or training, who are still at school but struggling to engage, or winter school leavers.
The course runs each Thursday, 10am – 4pm, where participants have the opportunity to gain a wide range of outdoor skills (including forestry, path building, working on the canals and using hand tools); they will also take part in a brick laying course and an emergency first aid course, while gaining different certificates, including a John Muir Award, a Dynamic Youth Award, and Saltire Awards for their volunteering.
Participants of both programmes will also be offered support by the staff and volunteer mentors both during and after taking part, in order to help participants build their confidence and take the next step, whether that means applying for a job, finding a volunteer role, or applying for college or a training course.
Scottish Waterways Trust are happy to meet with any prospective candidates for an informal discussion at a convenient location, where the team member can discuss Green Action and Canal College with them and help them decide which programme is right for them.
