Brief description: The Association are working to remove Himalayan Balsam along the banks of the Glen Burn in Lionthorn Woods, Falkirk. The work will take place during the day and evenings to suit volunteers. The work involves pulling up the balsam plants by hand on uneven ground. Work sessions will not exceed 4 hours.
Full description: Lionthorn Community Woodland Association are working to create a local wood that is fantastic for wildlife and accesible for recreation and enjoyment. The Glen Burn which runs through the wood has a great variety of plants, animals and insects living in and close by it including Kingfishers and Otters. However, this area is threatened by spreading Himalayan Balsam. Balsam takes over the riverbanks and shades out other plants leaving bare earth in the winter which increases erosion.
The good news is that Balsam is relatively easy to remove - it just needs pulled up before it seeds in September - its roots are very shallow.
We are looking for people who enjoy moderate exercise in the fresh air to spend however much time they wish helping us beat the Balsam.
But beware...Balsam bashing can be addictive!
Skills Required: Physically able to do moderate work on rough ground for 2 hours.
Have an interest in the activity.
Minimum age: 18
Takes place: Flexible to suit volunteer.
Training and Support Volunteers will be briefed on the Health and Safety aspects of the work.
Volunteers will then be guided to recognise and remove Himalayan Balsam.
