Brief description: The Meningitis Research Foundation are looking for people who have been affected by meningitis and septicaemia, personally or through a close friend/ relative, to train as a telephone befriender and support others in similar situations.
Full description: Many people find it helpful to talk to someone with a similar experience of meningitis and septicaemia.
The Meningitis Research Foundation runs a scheme that offers ongoing telephone support from a trained befriender to those more recently affected by meningitis and septicaemia.
We are looking for people who have been affected by meningitis, either personally or through a close friend or relative, to train as a telephone befriender. Befrienders have a range of experiences and to achieve the best possible outcome we match people’s stories as closely as possible and as a result we need more volunteers with a range of understanding. Don’t think because your experience is rare we don’t need you. We do!
If you feel you could offer support to someone who has been recently affected by these diseases please contact the Meningitis Research Foundation. Volunteering hours are flexible and full training and ongoing support is given.
Skills Required: Just and experience of Meningitis and/or septicaemia.
Minimum age: 18
Takes place: N/A occasionally and when needed about 1-2 hours a week depending on the volunteers availability and the amount of support the befriendee needs.
Training and Support Induction is by phone/email where we answer questions.Support from a named member of staff,regular supervision checks by phone/email.Training will take place over 2 days (usually a weekend). Additional training & support at the annual befrienders away day
Expenses We pay travel and accommodation cost for travelling to and staying at the training. We also put anyone up overnight who comes to our annual befriender support day and can’t get back the same day.
