Representation

As the local Third Sector Interface, a key part of our role is to represent the interests of the third sector and volunteering locally. We're not able to represent the sector, but can represent the sector's interests. This is due to the fact that as a non-thematic intermediary we have no vested interests in any particular activity within the third sector - we'd like to see them all flourish! Most organisations in our sector do have a specific interest and would like it if people they spoke to shared their interest and prioritised it. For this reason (and many others) the sector's views can vary dramatically on any given issue.

Main methods of representation
The main ways in which we represent the interests of the sector is by attending partnership meetings, responding to consultations or requests for opinions/views, supplying evidence/examples and ensuring people, organisations and partners are aware of what's happening locally and beyond. We also represent the interests of the third sector in regional and national settings.

Representation at Meetings/Partnerships
Often, we're asked to represent the interests of the sector at meetings. In most cases, we accept such requests and endeavour to do what we can to promote the interests of community groups, voluntary organisations, social enterprises and volunteering.

Where possible and practicable, we seek to secure additional third sector representation, particularly if the group is thematic. A good example of this is the Children's Commission. As the Interface, we have a seat at the table and promote generic interests. Alongside us, we have a representative from the Voluntary Sector Children's Services Forum. The representative from the Forum is better placed to talk about some of the 'technicalities' of delivering services for children and young people - something we would not seek to do.

Mapping Representation
We are committed to developing a visual map showing the range, quantity and nature of groups/partnerships/meetings we attend to represent the interests of the third sector. Once available, this map will be published here. In the meantime, please do contact us to find out more.
