The CVS E-Bulletin |
We have received some very positive and encouraging feedback after sending out our first few E-Bulletins at the end of 2004/early 2005. We find that groups enjoy and appreciate receiving more timely information in a very convenient format. However, the Bulletin is only as useful as the information contained within it and we therefore urge you to provide information for the Bulletins, or ideas on what kind of things you’d find beneficial from our Bulletins and newsletters. E-mail Gordon (gordon@cvsfalkirk.org.uk) or phone him (01324 692018) with your content and/or suggestions. Thank you.
See the bottom of this E-Bulletin for information on how to sign-up colleagues for the E-Bulletin, make suggestions for future editions or to stop receiving the E-Bulletin.

Scoping Community Learning and Development Work (CLD) with Equalities Groups |
What is Community Learning and Development? 2004 Scottish Executive Guidance on CLD (Working and Learning Together - WALT) states: “We are using the term 'community learning and development' to describe a way of working with and supporting communities……. to increase the skills, confidence, networks and resources they need to tackle problems and grasp opportunities….Its main aim is to help individuals and communities tackle real issues in their lives through community action and community-based learning.” WALT also sets out thee national priorities for CLD and the study will therefore reflect these: • Achievement through learning for adults • Achievement through learning for young people • Achievement through building community capacity
If you recognise your work as being relevant to any of these areas then they’d like to hear from you.
What they’d like from you: About 20 minutes of your time to complete an on-line questionnaire. Not all of the questions might be relevant to you, but they’d like you to complete it as best you can - whatever stage your work has reached in this area. Please complete the questionnaire ASAP and no later than Friday 11th March 2005. To complete the questionnaire click on the following link: www.avanteconsulting.co.uk/cld
Sean Stronach, CLD Coordinator in the Learning Connections team at Communities Scotland will be happy to answer any of your queries about the study - telephone 0131 479 5445 or e-mail Sean.Stronach@communitiesscotland.gsi.gov.uk

Child Protection Legislation |
Scotland's child protection legislation, which creates a list of people unsuitable to work with children, paid or voluntary, came into force on Monday 10th January. Disqualified people will be committing an offence if they apply for work or continue to work with children. From 11th April, organisations will need to check whether people they are considering appointing to a child care position are on the list. For more information, see the Government press release at www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Releases/2005/01/07163315, or go to their web section at www.scotland.gov.uk/about/ED/CnF/00017834/childprotection.aspx.

Let’s Stop the Stigma of Mental Ill Health |
See Me is an organisation whose aim is to get young people to think about how they behave towards people of their own age with mental health problems and to make them aware of the hurt and harm which stigma causes. Recent surveys have found that young people are ill-informed about mental health problems (visit www.seemescotland.org for more). It is therefore essential that we raise awareness and improve attitudes among young people. As a result a national campaign has been launched including television advertising and press work, together with posters and leaflets. The hope is that voluntary sector groups will follow the campaign’s approach and involve young people in decisions about effective use of materials and promotion of the campaign locally. The See Me website also includes a special site – www.justlikeme.org.uk – designed to provide young people with information, ideas and tips for local action. All materials are free of charge and can be ordered via the website.

Europe’s First Radio Station with Content Specifically for Blind/Partially Sighted People |
Despite all the advances we make as a society striving for equality, it’s remarkable how stuck we are on providing information through visual means: leaflets, posters, websites, even this e-bulletin and so on.
A recent initiative based in Glasgow seeks to address this imbalance. VIP On Air is an internet radio station producing 4 hours of original programming Monday to Friday with an aim to provide information that its audience would struggle to access elsewhere. It is estimated that around 600 listeners are tuned in at any one time, listening to programmes creating a visual outlook of news and current affairs. If you are interested contact 0141 338 3475, e-mail righthere@bbc.co.uk or write to Room 4112, BBC, Queen Margaret Drive, Glasgow G12 8DG
